Being a coin enthusiast and history buff, the Pleez B. Seated Collection marks the culmination of my life long passion for collecting 19th century US coins. To me, this challenging set is a time capsule that marks fascinating events and periods in our past spanning 52 years from 1839 to 1891. The California Gold Rush, our Civil War, Lincoln's assassination, the Wild West antics and demise of Jesse James and General Custer's Last Stand are but a few. This set is true Americana and I have thoroughly enjoyed building it, coin by coin.

Choice $27500 Pie Shattered Obverse, 2nd Finest Known, Choice Original, Gerry Fortin Top 100 Varieties Collection. Ahwash 2, Greer 101, Pie Shattered Obverse. What else is there to say other than the Holy Grail of Seated Dime varieties! An incredible opportunity for the astute collection to own one of the heaviest cracked dies in all of numismatics. This variety/terminal die state is one of the four key dates in the Top 100 Liberty Seated Dime Varieties set. The 1839 Pie Shattered obverse die state is extremely rare (R8 in VF or better) with the finest known example being the Ahwash and Greer plate coin graded PCGS AU55. The second finest known, is the offered example. At least three examples are known in PCGS Good 6 grade. The 1839 Pie Shattered obverse is known in four distinctly different die states without progressive diagnostics between the die states. The dies are initial employed for several proof strikes, followed by a limited number of circulation strikes with no die cracks. A third die state has the vertical die crack only up through the shield and into Liberty's mid section. The finally die state is the fully cracked obverse offered here. The die cracks are thick and elevated off the dime's surface indicating the obverse must be the anvil die and was held together during a small number of strikes. Housed in 2013 transition PCGS holder with blue label and edge view insert. Choice original surfaces and CAC approved. This piece is so high on the cool scale....question is, who will be the next owner?

Original $1450 Historically Important Ahwash Plate Coin, Original Surfaces, Repunched Large O Mintmark, Reverse Die Crack, Gerry Fortin Top 100 Varieties Collection. Ahwash 3, Greer 102, Repunched Large O Mintmark, Reverse Die Crack. Plate coin employed by Kamal Ahwash for his pioneering Encyclopedia of United States Liberty Seated Dimes 1837 - 1891 reference published in 1977 and 1981. The offered example was sold by Ahwash to Allen F. Lovejoy privately on April 21, 1976. This piece remained in the Lovejoy Collection until the Stacks' LoveJoy Sale held on October 16, 1990 where it was acquired by an imtermediate owner followed by the Gerry Fortin collection during March 1995. Since 1995, this dime become the reference example for the Ahwash 3, F-104a variety and Web-book plate coin during 2004 launch. A bisecting reverse die crack and sharply repunched Large O mintmark are the primary diagnostics for the F-104a late die state variety. Surfaces are strictly original and covered with gray patina that includes russet, blues and some gold hues. There are pin scratches in the upper right obverse field resulting in the Genuine PCGS designation. Housed in old blue label PCGS holder with standard ring insert. The PCGS label reads, "No Drapery, RPM FS-501 (FS-003.28)". A piece of numismatic history with Ahwash, Lovejoy and Fortin pedigrees. Who will be the next to own this piece?

Choice $975 Medium O Mintmark, Reverse Die Crack, Choice Original, Greer Plate Coin, Gerry Fortin Top 100 Varieties Collection . Ahwash 2, Medium O Mintmark With Die Crack. A historically significant offering given continual variety plate coin status since 1992. Surfaces are fully choice and perfectly original. This dime first appears in Brian Greer's The Complete Guide to Liberty Seated Dimes when published in 1992. Though only graded EF40, this piece is the plate coin for the Medium O mintmark size. Greer calls the Medium O, "the scarcest in all grades. It is easily the scarcest mintmark size and is very rare above VF." Greer assigns an R5 rarity rating in EF/AU grades. The offered example was purchased from Greer after his Guidebook release and become the 1840-O Medium O plate coin in the Fortin web-book. An incredible example with well worn reverse die and long vertical die crack through STAT(E)S. Housed in old blue label PCGS holder with standard ring insert. The perfectly original surfaces demanded CAC approval. This dime is not on any First Right of Refusal and is immediately available.

Gem $35000 Transitional Large O Closed Bud Reverse, Finest Extant, Gem Original, Greer Guidebook Plate Coin, Gerry Fortin Top 100 Varieties Collection. Ahwash 1, Greer 102, Transitional Large O Closed Bud Reverse. Struck in early 1841 at the New Orleans mint with a left over Closed Bud reverse die from 1840 due to lack of die shipment of the new Open Bud reverse design. Greer indicates that "transitional Large and Small O dimes were struck from leftover 1840-O reverse dies most likely before the arrival of the first reverse dies of 1841 Open Bud which were delivered on Apri 7, 1841. Mint records for 1841 show 160,000 dimes were delivered from New Orleans prior to April of that year. I believe that these were deliveries included the Closed Bud 1841-O dimes, as well as many dated 1840-O. The extreme rarity of both closed bud varieties indicates a very small mintage." Collectors have been attempting for years to cherrypick examples due to substantial premiums in all grades. I consider both the Large and Small O Transitional Closed Bud dimes to be key entries in the Top 100 Liberty Seated Dime Variety set. Large O Closed Bud dimes can be located in lower circulated grades between AG and VF. Most will be found with problems due to lengthy time in circulation. Obtaining problem free and original examples in EF or better will require a long term collecting horizon as few are known. Once obtained, these specimens will typical reside in an advanced seated coinage collection for multiple years. At the certified AU grade level only two examples were known to the hobby; PCGS AU58 (Jack Marston Collection) and PCGS AU55 (Gerry Fortin Collection). Upon Jack Marston's untimely death, the PCGS AU58 example was placed at Heritage auction and sold. This piece can be easily identified by a mark on the lower right reverse wreath. The Fortin AU55 example is easily recognized by the lovely bullseye toning pattern on obverse and reverse. I've taken the liberty to call out the Fortin example as the finest known since crack out dealers have messed with the Jack Marston piece and added toning towards securing a PCGS MS62 certified grade. The Gerry Fortin example is completely natural and received Gold CAC approval during 2014. I would much rather own this AU55 example with Gold CAC rather than the AU58/MS62 example that no longer looks fully natural. Housed in older blue label PCGS holder with standard ring insert. The PCGS label reads, "Transitional Rev Large O, FS-902". A very special offering for the advanced collector who desires the finest numismatic properties and a piece of numismatic history given the Greer Guidebook plate coin pedigree.

Choice $1950 Shattered Reverse Die of 1841, Medium O, Choice Original, Fully Struck, Light Gold Patina, Gerry Fortin Top 100 Varieties Collection. Ahwash 3, Greer 101, Medium O, Shattered Reverse Die of 1841. Reverse C for the 1842-O date is a left over die from 1841. It was previously labeled as the 1841 Reverse D. When reused in 1842, the die has degraded further with numerous die cracks and considerable weakness in the legend. It is likely that this reverse was lapped considering the reduction in wreath and legend details when compared to the bolder reverse strikes on 1841-O Medium O examples. Many circulated 1842-O examples are seen struck from this die pair with the legend being barely visible outside of the wreath leaves. The position of the die crack through STAT(ES) is the primary diagnostic for this variety. The offered example is the Fortin web-book plate coin and off the market for over a decade. Surfaces are covered with a uniform light gold patina and blemish free. Just try finding a better example at the AU grade level given the badly lapped reverse die and low survival rates in AU and Mint State graded. Housed in PCGS old green holder with CAC approval.

More importantly, this example offers a hammered strike with deeply rounded stars, full facial details and crisply impressed hair curls. Surfaces are perfectly original with mottled brown gold layered over steely silver gray. If building a Top 100 Seated Dime Varieties set, then please give this example from the Gerry Fortin Collection serious consideration. Monfort Johnson Pedigree, Gem Original, Gouged Reverse Die, Gerry Fortin Top 100 Varieties Collection. Greer 101, The Montfort Johnson plate coin as featured in the November 1979 edition of the LSCC's Gobrecht Journal. In that article, Monfort Johnson provides a lenghty discussion concerning survival rates for Civil War dimes and a detailed analysis of an 1862 dime with deep reverse gouge. At that time, this variety was labeled as Ahwash 6 since the Kam Ahwash Encyclopedia was the ony reference available. The offered example is the Montfort Johnson coin with its pedigree carefully preserved for multiple decades. Frosty luster and faint gold/rose rim toning are the highlights of this historical piece. Grading is quite conservative with frosty luster that exceeds expectations for MS63 grade level. The reverse die gouge behind O(N)E into (E) is crisp against reflective mint state surfaces. Housed in older PCGS blue label holder with standard ring insert. No CAC attempt. Considerable eye appeal along with an important LSCC pedigree should attractive attention.

Original $24500 Polished Arrows, Finest of Four Known, Struck From Mirrored Dies, Original Surfaces, Gerry Fortin Top 100 Varieties Collection. Greer 102, Polished Arrows. The finest known with research strongly suggesting this piece was struck during a Philadelphia mint experiment to gang arrows and date digits on the same punch. The experiment failed and a few specimens escaped the mint after the die were poorly reworked. Please allow me to walk GFRC customers through this dime's history. Brian Greer listed a "No Arrows" variety in his Seated Dime Guidebook during 1992. Greer indicated that "The arrows have either been filled in the die or were weakly punched and show only very faintly." This variety was discovered by James Skwarek and is considered extremely rare, as only two examples are currently known (this is 1992). A close study of the plate coin, as purchased at the 2003 FUN show, suggests an alternate theory for the presence of faint arrows. First, the plate coin was produced from polished dies and is prooflike. This suggests that the plate coin is from an early striking from a new set of dies. The digits in the date appear to be punched at least twice. The first date punch, as seen under the base of all four digits in the date, is weak and suggests that the die in the area of the date and arrows was polished. The polishing is most evident on the top of the 7 and 4 digits in conjunction with the left and right arrows. It is unknown as to why the mint employee attempted to remove the date and arrows by die polishing. After the polishing of the date area, a second attempt is made to repunch the date digits only. Evidence of the second punching of the date is clearly visible at the base of each digit. Since few examples are known, the Philadelphia mint employees at the steam press may have rejected this obverse die upon discovering that the arrows were very faint or not present. All 1874 dimes were struck with arrows, as required by law. The question now becomes that of how many examples were struck from this obverse die and released into circulation. Brian Greer indicated at the 2003 FUN, upon seeing the above plate coin, that the James Skwarek piece was the only one seen and was in a lower circulated grade. Fast forward to 2016 and currently housed in NGC MS Details holder with large font label. This is the finest of four examples known. This dime is original and the highly polished die surfaces confuse the TPG graders. PCGS has graded it questionable color in the past. This piece was originally purchased in an old white ANACS AU58 holder but cracked out as clearly mint state.

Gem $3450 Gem Frosty Original, Rare Type II Reverse, Gerry Fortin Top 100 Varieties Collection. Ahwash 4, I really dislike the thought of selling this incredible 1876 Carson City Type II Reverse dime. For those new to Liberty Seated dime varieties, only one die pairing is known with a Type II reverse die. This variety is listed in Cherrypickers and part of the Top 100 Varieties set. Locating examples in any grade will be most challenging. The offered piece is within the condition census. Mint frost luster drips off this incredible piece. Strike is hammered with every hair curl and reverse wreath details being crisp and fully defined. Eye appeal is 5 Stars. PCGS grading is conservative given the old generation holder. Housed in older PCGS blue label holder with standard ring insert. The PCGS label reads "Type 2 Rev FS-901 (FS-005). No one should be surprised with the CAC approval given the gem surfaces and substantial eye appeal. If this piece has old time bullsye toning, then a Gold CAC may have been possible considering the bold luster. Ready for a new home in an advanced Top 100 Collection. Choice Cracked Obverse Die #3, Greer and Fortin Plate Coin, Near Gem Original, Conservative Grading, Gerry Fortin Top 100 Varieties Collection . Cracked Obverse Die #3, Greer 103. Another significant Top 100 varieties offering from the Gerry Fortin Collection. This near gem 1838 cracked obverse example was initial employed by Brian Greer as the Greer 103 plate coin on page 37 of his DLRC Press Guidebook. After publication of that ground breaking reference, I purchased this piece from Greer during November 1992 and then re-used as the Fortin web-book plate coin. So the pedigree for the last three decades is well defined. This 1838 dime is a near gem at the assigned AU58 grade level and could probably grade MS62 with a resubmission as I don't see rub. Strike is deeply impressed with every device crisply defined. Luster is ample with golden rose hues under a bright light. Housed in older PCGS blue label holder with standard ring insert.

Original Historically Important Ahwash Plate Coin, Original Surfaces, Repunched Large O Mintmark, Reverse Die Crack, Gerry Fortin Top 100 Varieties Collection.

Gem Gem Original, Cobweb Shattered Reverse Die, One of Finest Extant, Gerry Fortin Top 100 Varieties Collection . Ahwash 6, Greer 101. The popular 1839 New Orleans Cobweb Shattered Reverse die variety in a very late die state coupled with superb mint state condition. The cobweb shattered reverse has been a favorite of Seated dime variety collectors. Building a progress die state collection is possible since this variety is available in circulated grades. However, in mint state, 1839-O dimes are quite scarce. Add in the cobweb shattered reverse variety and the late die state cracks renders this piece a very rare and probably one of the finest examples extant. Eye appeal is dramatic with late die state obverse and reverse die cracks plus the beautiful old time bullseye ring toning. To top things off, the strike is hammered. Housed in older blue label PCGS holder with Gold CAC approval. This dime could easily be the center piece of an advanced Top 100 collection as it has been one of my favorites for over a decade.

Choice Repunched 841 Digits, Excessively Rusted Reverse Die State, Fully Struck, Golden Patina, Few Marks, Gerry Fortin Top 100 Varieties Collection . Greer 102, The repunched 841 die variety with badly rusted reverse die. Excessive die rust is clustered around (UNI)TED and at DI(ME) along with die pitting throughout the reverse. This dime has to be the finest extant (as graded MS60) in terms of strike and eye appeal. Strike is perfectly hammered while surfaces are strictly original with luster consistent with a much higher mint state grade. The MS60 grade is the result of several small blemishes on obverse and reverse that are not distracting. I challenge you to have a close look to locate them. Gem Transitional Large O Closed Bud Reverse, Finest Extant, Gem Original, Greer Guidebook Plate Coin, Gerry Fortin Top 100 Varieties Collection.

This dime first appears in Kamal Ahwash's Encyclopedia of United States Liberty Seated Dimes 1837 - 1891 on page 65 as the plate coin for the Small O die variety. The Ahwash plate images are poor and do not capture the incredible eye appeal offered by this dime. Purchased in early 1999 and housed in the Fortin Collection for nearly two decades. This piece is undergraded at the EF45 assigned grade and full AU with residual mint frost throughout obvere and reverse. Both dies are well worn and in a late die state; the obverse rim cud is huge while the reverse exhibits a cobweb of die cracks. Small O 1842 dimes are typically found with weak strikes, especially at the head. Choice Date Punch Overlaps Base, Choice Original, Eliasberg/Fortin Pedigree, Gerry Fortin Top 100 Varieties Collection. Date Punch Overlaps Base, Ahwash 1, Greer 101. Locating the 1847 Philadelphia date in mint state is a substantial challenge. How about the Eliasberg example that is also the F-101 Date Punch Over Base variety for an advanced Top 100 Varieties set? This is a choice original example that is conservatively graded at assigned MS61 grade. Strike is absolutely hammered with bold device details throughout obverse and reverse. Liberty's head is incredibly well defined as are the rounded stars and every vein on the reverse wreath leaves. Surfaces are completely blemish free. Why the assigned MS61 grade? The luster is a bit muted due to the thick gun metal gray patina. Since housed in a PCGS old green holder, the grading standards favored frosty white coins and rewarded those with higher mint state grades. In today's market, where originality is recognized, this piece should grade higher. CAC approval validates the originality and overall quality. Gem Repunched 851 Digits, Gem Original, Old Album Toning, Gerry Fortin Top 100 Varieties Collection. Greer 101, Repunched 851 Digits. Ok, one would believe that 1851 Philadelphia strikes could be located across all grades since mintage was 1,026.500. In upper AU and Mint State grades, the date is rated as R5- rarity by Greer in his 1992 Guidebook. I happen to agree as few fully struck examples with choice surfaces have been seen during my years of collecting. This date was always on my radar screen as underrated and few were found. The offered example offered a bold obverse strike with rounded stars and crisp gown line. The reverse has some slight weakness at the upper left wreath. Choice Repunched 56 Digits Down, Rare Offering, Choice Original Frosty Luster, Gerry Fortin Top 100 Varieties Collection. Ahwash 3, Greer 101, Repunched 56 Digits Down. In his DLRC Press Guidebook, Brian Greer describes the Repunched Date Down variety as, "Strong repunching shows below the 1 and above the 56. A nice example of a repunched date. Rare above VF." The offered PCGS MS62 CAC example is one of the two finest known. Surfaces are choice original with frosty luster resulting from being struck by rusted dies. As with nearly all dimes in the Gerry Fortin collection, strike is complete with bold head and gown line along with rounded stars. Frankly, I thought this piece should grade at the MS63 level but CAC approval validate the overall originality, eye appeal and blemish free surfaces at assigned PCGS grade level. The TPG do struggle with grading Seated coinage struck from badly rusted dies. Housed in old blue label PCGS holder with standard insert. One of my favorite pieces in the Top 100 set for obvious reasons...just try to find another one this nice!

Gem Misplaced 9 Digit In Gown Discovery Coin, Greer Plate Coin, Gem Original, Fully Struck, Conservative Grading, Gerry Fortin Top 100 Varieties Collection. The discovery coin for the Blundered 9 digit in the gown. As stated by Brian Greer in his 1992 Liberty Seated Dime Guidebook, "The bottom of a digit shows clearly up in the drapery just below a fold, to the right of the Y in LIBERTY. Discovered by Gerry Fortin in 1991. Surprisingly, this blunder was clearly visible in Ahwash as Ahwash 2, but undetected for 14 years." I really hate to see this wonderful Seated dime leaving the Fortin Collection. A near gem with frosty luster and full strike throughout obverse and reverse. There are no blemishes whatsoever. This dime has been off the market for nearly 50 years as purchased directly from the Bob Levi Collection in 1988. The Levi Collection was assembed in the early 1970s with Bob purchasing a number of dimes from Kam Ahwash. Housed in 2013 generation PCGS holder with CAC approval.

Not listed in Greer and identified on this dime by Fortin after release of the 1992 Guidebook. Die doubling is clearly visible on the letters within UNITED STATES. Strong doubling can be readily seen on (U)NITED and STA(TES). There is doubling on Liberty's nose and within her lips resulting in the nickname, "Doubled Lips variety". Conservative grading by PCGS and housed in old blue label holder. Overall originality and eye appeal warrant the CAC approval. Purchased back in 1995 and off the market for two decades.

Gem Monfort Johnson Pedigree, Gem Original, Gouged Reverse Die, Gerry Fortin Top 100 Varieties Collection.

Choice Repunched 870 Digits, Crusty Choice Original, Fully Struck, Gerry Fortin Top 100 Varieties Collection. Ahwash 3, Greer 101, Repunched 870 Digits. A splendid 1870 Philadelphia strike with boldy repunched 0 digit in the date. The repunching of the 0 digit in the date is very obvious. This digit appears to have been triple punched with traces of prior digits above and below the final 0. Both the 8 and 7 are marginally repunched consistent with the lower repunching of the 0 digit. The offered example is a near gem with thick crusty original patina covered both obverse and reverse. Under bright light, the obverse fields shift to gold and light blue with the reverse stays at at gun metal blue coloring. The key attribute of this piece, other than originality, is the excredible hammered strike. Each device detail including all reverse wreath grains and veins are crisp. Housed in older PCGS blue label holder with standard ring insert. Off the market for over a decade in the Fortin collection. CAC approval is a no brainer for this lovely Seated dime.

Original Polished Arrows, Finest of Four Known, Struck From Mirrored Dies, Original Surfaces, Gerry Fortin Top 100 Varieties Collection.

That is it for those graded against strict PCGS standards. The CAC approval validates that the offered MS64 example is in the upper condition census. Surfaces are strictly original with frosty device details throughout Liberty and the reverse wreath and left field. The reverse die was quite cracked up at the time of striking this piece. There are many cobweb like die cracks throughout the entire wreath. A superior example of the F-101 variety that is housed in older blue label PCGS holder with CAC approval. This set was formed without a single, premeditated plan; rather, it evolved from an ongoing study of seated coinage and from a combination of three smaller and more focused sets. The starting point was a pair of sets I began assembling in 2006: a set of no drapery seated quarter die varieties and a pre-1853 date and mint seated half dollar set. As those sets were essentially completed and upgrades became more and more difficult, I went on to start a type set that included half dimes, dimes and dollars. The intent was to include one great example representing each of the major design types of Liberty Seated silver coinage. While searching for type set examples I got hooked on the earliest designs of each seated denomination: no drapery half dimes, dimes, and quarters, and the small letters half dollars. I decided to include all silver issues minted in 1837-1840 in the set. The eleven years devoted to forming the set as it exists today featured a great deal of buying, selling, upgrading, re-grading, and submitting to CAC. As I continued to learn and study the specific issues in the set, the inclusion criterion for new purchases evolved into a binary "hell yes" or no and I reached a point where it was a very rare event for me to find a coin for sale that I like better for its grade than the one in my set. To be included a coin had to grab my attention immediately, continue to impress under close examination with a glass, and then still make me love it after I had owned it for a few months. Eventually, the exercise became exclusively about quality rather than completeness and coins in the set that didn’t pass the "hell yes" or no test were parted with, even if no replacement was available. It's been great fun, and I hope the set speaks for itself, but it is time to move on. I hope the new owners enjoy these coins as much as I have.

Choice $3200 New December 21! Rare Early Die State F-101 Example R6, Choice Original, Uniform Gray Patina, Soft Satiny Luster, Saw Mill Run Collection. Wow is all that I can say upon viewing this incredible 1840 New Orleans F-101 strike graded AU58 with CAC approval. Liberty Seated dime variety specialist can appreciate the rarity of this offering for multiple reason. First, 1840-O dimes saw heavy circulation with low survival rate in upper grades and especially choice. Second, examples of the Large O F-101 die pairing struck with early die state dies are essentially non existant until this piece arrived in the Saw Mill Run Collection consignment. Nearly all F-101 die pair examples were struck from lapped dies in the F-101a die state. The offered example is fully choice with uniform gun metal gray patina. Strike is crisp and the only issue holding this piece from a GFRC Gem designation is a faint toned over micro line across Liberty's mid section. This rare dime is freshly graded and housed in NGC large font label holder with CAC approval. A most special offering from the Saw Mill Run Collection.
